Hong Kong

Studying 'City Life' as part of their geography topic, Year 5 were pleased to receive  a letter from the children at DBIS (Discovery Bay International School) in Hong Kong. The letter detailed all the wonderful things about their island, Lantau Island. It sounded absolutely amazing! They have pink dolphins and a Disneyland! (read their letter in full below)

Ladybarn children wanted to thank them for their very interesting letter, but also wanted to persuade them that our city, Manchester, is just as awesome! Therefore, they wrote replies highlighting all the wonderful features of Manchester! Using all the research they had done in geography about our city, they included lots of fantastic information in their letters - persuasively!

It was agreed, that both places - Lantau Island and Manchester - had amazing places to visit and that both were multicultural which meant food from all around the world was available in restaurants there. It was also obvious that children from both schools were very proud of their localities!

Year 4: Linking, Learning and Letter Writing!

Year 4 were delighted to receive a letter from the children at Discovery Bay International school (DBIS), in Hong Kong! As their topic is Asia, they eagerly wrote back to find out more about Hong Kong and life for children over there.  They also told them about themselves, Ladybarn and Manchester.  Read all about it:

In addition, our children were sent an amazing video from DBIS - a tour of their fantastic school!

What similarities and differences can you see?

We talked about both schools liking the same things such  as soccer and basketball, but the children in Hong Kong also learn Mandarin in school, have some different food like sushi and noodles and also have different animals over there such as  pink dolphins!

We realised that we have lots in common with people in different countries and the differences are really interesting!

Our Year 4 children have been learning all about life in Asia - thanks to their friends from DISCOVERY BAY INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL in Hong Kong!

They have also learnt a lot about how the Chinese New Year is celebrated there - we loved their Lion  Dance!

Check out all our amazing learning below :

Year 5 linked with Discovery Bay for their 'City Life' topic.

They compared and contrasted life between the two schools and found similarities as well as differences - celebrating diversity!

Their menu was interesting:

A school link was set up between a class in Hong Kong  and 6 classes across our  trust! The school is called Discovery Bay International School (DBIS).  http://www.dbis.edu.hk/ http://www.dbis.edu.hk/media -

Year 4, at both Ladybarn and Green End, were studying China as their topic so welcomed the link with the school in Hong Kong.

Year 2 at Green End joined the link as they had the topic 'Wish you Were Here,' studying continents.

Children from Ladybarn and Green End  asked the children from Hong Kong  questions about their school and life there  through a padlet - check out this fantastic work!

We also sent the children in Hong Kong examples of our work on the topic of China / Asia including: Chinese Writing, Chinese art work and a  PowerPoint done by a very enthusiastic Year 2 child at home! (Click to view!)

Thank you to all teachers and children involved in the link. The padlet was a great way to learn all about children in Hong Kong. The children in Hong Kong were able to practise their literacy skills by answering these questions and in fact completed this project during a holiday period for homework! Extra thanks for this!
